Psycho-Cross … It Sounds Like Cyclo-Cross

Abandoned Psychiatric Hospital ... Psycho Cross ... Get it?

Abandoned Psychiatric Hospital … Psycho Cross … Get it?

Cyclocross racing returned to the Warfield Complex in Sykesville, MD on Saturday, October 4th with strong winds and fast racing. Constructed in the late 1800’s, the Warfield Complex is home to the former Springfield Hospital Center, one of the states largest operating mental institutions.  Abandoned since the 1960’s, many of the buildings still sit vacant, and the Psycho Cross course smartly uses the space between and around the buildings to create a tight, punchy course.

Crosshairs Racing kicked off its day of racing in the Mens 35+ 3/4. Alex Castro finished 13th, while Charlie Kearns DNFed due to an injury.

Kevin Hays represented Crosshairs (sans shark costume) with a solid 7th in the Mens 3/4. Kimani Nielsen had one of the three podiums of the day for Crosshairs, with a 4th place finish in the Mens 35+ 1/2/3. Chris McGill finished 12th in the same race, and Jay Dove finished 15th, despite a mid-race mechanical.

In the Mens 45+ 1/2/3/4, Matt Parse was runner up, coming in 2nd to perennial power Blair Saunders. Sol Schott finished 29th and sold a lot of pie (delicious pie at that).

Elliott Caldwell finished just off the podium (and out of the $$$) in 6th in a small Mens 1/2/3 field and Mark Cavey rounded out the day with a 4th place finish in the Singlespeed race.

Crossfather Bill Schieken was on the mic all day, providing witty and timely commentary during all the races. A great pre-Hyattsville day of racing that was well worth the trip up to Carroll County.
